Most men start at 10 mg taken about 60 minutes before sex, no more than once a day, and the FDA label lists headache, flushing and a stuffy nose as the most common side effects.

This article is educational and is not medical advice. It is for adults 18 and older. Vardenafil is a prescription medication, and a licensed clinician decides whether it is right for you and at what dose.
The short version
- Vardenafil is generic Levitra: an FDA-approved PDE5 inhibitor taken as needed for ED. Most vardenafil sold in the US today is generic.
- Dosage (FDA label): start at 10 mg about 60 minutes before sex, adjust to 5 mg or 20 mg, maximum once a day. Men 65 and older start at 5 mg.
- The label's most common side effects are headache (15%), flushing (11%) and stuffy or runny nose (9%), then upset stomach, sinus symptoms and dizziness.
- Never take vardenafil with nitrates or riociguat. Several antibiotics, antifungals and HIV drugs cap the dose at 2.5 mg or 5 mg.
- Levitra vs Viagra: same class, similar timing and similar half-life (about 4 to 5 hours vs about 4 hours). Neither is proven better for most men; generic sildenafil is usually cheaper.
- HealthyMale lists generic vardenafil (20 mg, $78) and a vardenafil ODT ($182) with no subscription; DrHouse physicians can prescribe it to any pharmacy.
| Drug | Usual starting dose | When to take it | Half-life | Food effect | Max frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vardenafil (Levitra) | 10 mg (5 mg if 65+) | About 60 minutes before sex | About 4 to 5 hours | High-fat meal lowered peak level 18% to 50% | Once a day |
| Vardenafil ODT (Staxyn) | 10 mg only | About 60 minutes before sex, on the tongue without liquid | Short-acting, like the tablet | With or without food | Once a day |
| Sildenafil (Viagra) | 50 mg | About 1 hour before (30 minutes to 4 hours) | About 4 hours | High-fat meal delays it about 60 minutes | Once a day |
| Tadalafil (Cialis, as needed) | 10 mg | Before sex; works up to 36 hours | 17.5 hours | Not affected by food | Once a day |

Our Vardenafil Pick
HealthyMale Vardenafil
One of the few online pharmacies that lists generic vardenafil and the dissolving ODT form by name.
Clinical oversight: Verifiable accreditation (VIPPS pharmacies, LegitScript, HIPAA) and unusually transparent itemized pricing; intro offers rotate through its promotional channels, so confirm the current one on the site before you order.
HealthyMale is a long-running US men's-health pharmacy and telehealth service that reports operations since 1998 and pairs US-licensed physicians with VIPPS-certified pharmacies. It has the widest published ED menu of our approved partners, and it is one of the few that lists vardenafil by name.
What it lists today. On October 30, 2026, HealthyMale's ED page showed Vardenafil HCL at $78 and Vardenafil HCL ODT at $182. The vardenafil product page lists a 20 mg tablet from manufacturer Zydus, says it is taken only when needed, and notes that it is sold in single-pill quantities with a maximum of 4 doses on that listing. Treat these as starting figures and confirm the quantity and total at checkout.
Access runs through a phone consultation with a US-licensed physician, and a prescription is issued only at the clinician's discretion. The site also advertises a free doctor consultation and free prescription with purchase, free shipping over $50, and a-la-carte ordering with no forced subscription.

What we like
- Lists generic vardenafil and the vardenafil ODT by name
- No forced subscription
- Same pharmacy also sells generic sildenafil and tadalafil from about $20 if you switch
Worth noting
- Vardenafil costs more than generic sildenafil or tadalafil here
- Small listed quantity on the vardenafil product page
- Phone consult rather than video
Who should buy it: Adults 18+ who have been told vardenafil suits them, or who did not get on with sildenafil, and want a pharmacy that lists generic vardenafil and the ODT form without a subscription.
What we don't like: The vardenafil listing is priced well above HealthyMale's $20 starting price for generic sildenafil and tadalafil, the listed quantity is small, and the consult is by phone rather than video.
Bottom line: Most ED telehealth brands sell only sildenafil and tadalafil. HealthyMale lists generic vardenafil (Vardenafil HCL 20 mg, manufacturer shown as Zydus) at $78 and a vardenafil orally disintegrating tablet at $182, with a phone consult and no forced subscription. Confirm the quantity and final price at checkout.
02 · A video visit where a physician can prescribe vardenafil, then fill it anywhere
Fill at Any PharmacyDrHouse
An on-demand video telehealth platform where a single visit, possibly covered by insurance, gets you a real prescription you can fill cheaply at any pharmacy.
Clinical oversight: LegitScript-approved and HIPAA-compliant with stated 50-state availability and a published visit price; the medication cost depends on the drug and pharmacy you pick, so the total is in your control but not fixed up front.
DrHouse approaches the sample question from the other side: instead of bundling medication, it makes the clinical visit itself fast and low-commitment. It is an on-demand telehealth platform, LegitScript-approved and HIPAA-compliant, available in all 50 states, where the company states a provider can join a video visit in roughly 15 minutes.
Why that matters for sample hunters. The ED visit is listed at $129 or your insurance copay, and DrHouse states insurance may cover the visit. When clinically appropriate, the physician e-prescribes sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, avanafil, or alprostadil to the pharmacy of your choice, where the medication is priced separately. Generic sildenafil and tadalafil are inexpensive at many US pharmacies, especially with discount programs, so a copay visit plus a small generic fill can be one of the cheapest compliant ways to start.
DrHouse does not prescribe controlled substances, and a prescription is never guaranteed, the clinician decides. If you want an all-in bundle with medication included, HealthyMale's model will feel simpler; if you want clinical speed and pharmacy flexibility, DrHouse is the one.

- LegitScript-approved, HIPAA-compliant
What we like
- One-time visit, no subscription or auto-ship
- Insurance may cover the visit, potentially reducing it to a copay
- E-prescribes to any pharmacy, so you can shop the lowest generic price
- Fast: provider joins by video in about 15 minutes, per the company
Worth noting
- Medication priced separately, no bundled total
- Visit fee applies regardless of the prescribing decision
- No physical product ever ships from DrHouse itself
Who should buy it: Adults 18+ who want a one-time, no-subscription evaluation from a licensed physician, would like the chance to put insurance toward the visit, and are comfortable filling a generic prescription at their own pharmacy.
What we don't like: You have to price the medication yourself at the pharmacy, so there is no single all-in number to compare, and the visit fee applies even if the clinician decides medication is not appropriate.
Bottom line: The smart pick if your real question behind 'free samples' is 'what would this cost me to just try, once': one video visit at $129 or your copay, no subscription, and an e-prescription you can fill as a cheap generic at whatever pharmacy prices it lowest.
03 · Cheapest FDA-approved generic if your clinician prefers sildenafil or tadalafil
Lowest Per-Tablet PriceNu Image Medical ED Tablets
A telehealth clinic founded in 2004, online since 2008 and available in all 50 states, that lists FDA-approved generic sildenafil and tadalafil tablets alongside compounded combination options.
Clinical oversight: Per-tablet prices published on the provider's own men's sexual performance page, with each product labeled FDA-approved or compounded. Every order is subject to a medical consultation and ships only if a licensed U.S. provider prescribes it.
Nu Image Medical is a telehealth clinic that says it was founded in 2004, has operated online since 2008 and is available in all 50 states. Its men's sexual performance line lists four options (all provider-published): a generic sildenafil tablet as low as $3 per tablet and a generic tadalafil tablet as low as $5 per tablet, both FDA-approved and both priced on a 12-month supply; a compounded sildenafil plus tadalafil rapid-dissolve tablet as low as $4 per tablet on a 5-month supply; and the compounded Mt. Everest program (tadalafil, oxytocin and PT-141) from $4 per tablet on a 5-month supply.
You share your goals online, a licensed U.S. provider reviews them, and medication ships discreetly only if it is prescribed.

What we like
- Lowest published per-tablet price we track on FDA-approved generics
- Each product labeled FDA-approved or compounded
- Available in all 50 states
Worth noting
- Lowest prices require a 12-month supply
- Combination and Mt. Everest products are compounded, not FDA-approved
Who should buy it: Adults 18+ who want an FDA-approved generic tablet at a low per-tablet price and are comfortable buying a multi-month supply.
What we don't like: The lowest prices depend on a 12-month supply, so the up-front cost is higher than a one-month order, and the combination products are compounded rather than FDA-approved.
Bottom line: If you want the FDA-approved generic tablet and are fine buying a longer supply, Nu Image lists the lowest per-tablet prices we track: sildenafil as low as $3 and tadalafil as low as $5. The low figures are tied to a 12-month supply, so check the up-front total before you pay.
04 · On-demand tablet that contains vardenafil (compounded combination)
Lowest Daily Plan PriceShed Steady (daily tadalafil)
A 5-minute online intake for a daily tadalafil 5mg tablet listed from $49.67 a month.
Clinical oversight: Prices and ingredients published on the provider's product page, which also states the tablets are compounded and not FDA-approved. A licensed provider reviews the intake before anything is prescribed.
Shed's men's sexual health line has two products: Steady, a once-daily tadalafil 5mg tablet from $49.67 per month, and Rise, an on-demand tablet combining apomorphine, tadalafil and vardenafil from $66.33 per month, taken 15 to 60 minutes before sex (provider-published). Apomorphine is FDA-approved for Parkinson's disease "off" episodes, not for ED. You complete a roughly 5-minute online intake, and a licensed provider decides whether to prescribe.

What we like
- Lowest published daily tadalafil price we track

Worth noting
- Compounded, not FDA-approved
- Check plan length behind the monthly price
Who should buy it: Adults 18+ who want a daily tadalafil routine at the lowest published monthly price and are comfortable with a compounded tablet.
What we don't like: Compounded rather than FDA-approved generic tablets, and the lowest monthly figure may assume a longer plan, so check the billing terms.
Bottom line: Shed publishes the lowest monthly price we track for a daily tadalafil plan, from $49.67 a month for 5mg. The trade-off is disclosed on its own page: both its ED tablets are compounded, not FDA-approved. A good fit if daily dosing is what a clinician recommends and price matters most.
What is vardenafil?
Vardenafil is a prescription PDE5 inhibitor that treats erectile dysfunction. It is the active ingredient in Levitra and, in an orally disintegrating form, in Staxyn. Like sildenafil and tadalafil, it blocks the enzyme PDE5, which lets blood vessels in the penis relax and fill during sexual stimulation. It does not cause an erection on its own, and it does not raise sex drive.
The FDA approves generic vardenafil tablets and generic vardenafil orally disintegrating tablets (ODT). When we checked DailyMed on October 30, 2026, the current vardenafil labels were almost all generic; brand Levitra entries there were older repackager listings. In practice, a vardenafil prescription today is usually filled as a generic.
Vardenafil dosage
For most men, the FDA label's starting dose is 10 mg, taken about 60 minutes before sexual activity, no more than once a day. Based on how well it works and how well you tolerate it, a clinician may raise the dose to 20 mg or lower it to 5 mg. Vardenafil tablets come in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg strengths and can be taken with or without food.
- Age 65 and older: the label says to consider a 5 mg starting dose.
- Moderate liver impairment (Child-Pugh B): start at 5 mg, and do not exceed 10 mg.
- Stable on an alpha-blocker (for example, for an enlarged prostate): start at 5 mg.
- Ritonavir or cobicistat: no more than 2.5 mg in 72 hours.
- Indinavir, saquinavir, atazanavir, clarithromycin, or ketoconazole or itraconazole 400 mg a day: no more than 2.5 mg in 24 hours.
- Erythromycin, or ketoconazole or itraconazole 200 mg a day: no more than 5 mg in 24 hours.
For a deeper look at strengths across all ED drugs, compare our sildenafil dosage guide and tadalafil dosage guide.
Vardenafil ODT vs vardenafil tablets
The orally disintegrating tablet (the Staxyn form) comes only in 10 mg and is not interchangeable with the 10 mg film-coated tablet. The ODT label says it delivers higher blood levels than the 10 mg Levitra tablet, so you cannot swap one for the other milligram for milligram. You place the ODT on the tongue, let it dissolve, and take it without liquid, about 60 minutes before sex, no more than once a day.
The ODT suits men who dislike swallowing pills. Its trade-off is flexibility: if 10 mg is too much or too little, the clinician has to switch you to the regular tablet. HealthyMale lists both forms; the ODT costs more.
How long does vardenafil take to work and how long does it last?
The label says to take vardenafil about 60 minutes before sex. Blood levels peak between 30 minutes and 2 hours after a dose (median 60 minutes), and its half-life is about 4 to 5 hours. That puts vardenafil in the same short-acting group as sildenafil, not in tadalafil's long-acting group.
Half-life is how long it takes for half the drug to clear, not the length of an erection. In practice, the window in which sexual stimulation can produce an erection more easily lasts several hours. A high-fat meal lowered peak vardenafil levels by 18% to 50% in label studies, so a heavy meal right before a dose may blunt or delay it.
If you want a longer window, tadalafil lasts up to 36 hours. See how long Cialis lasts for the comparison.
Vardenafil side effects
The most common vardenafil side effects in the FDA label are headache (15% vs 4% on placebo), flushing (11% vs 1%) and rhinitis, a stuffy or runny nose (9% vs 3%). They are usually mild and fade as the drug wears off. The label's full list of reactions reported by at least 2% of men and more often than placebo:
- Headache: 15%
- Flushing: 11%
- Rhinitis (stuffy or runny nose): 9%
- Dyspepsia (upset stomach): 4%
- Sinusitis: 3%
- Flu-like symptoms: 3%
- Dizziness: 2%
- Raised creatine kinase on a blood test: 2%
- Nausea: 2%
- Back pain: 2.0% (vs 1.7% on placebo)
Get emergency care for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, sudden decrease or loss of hearing, chest pain, or fainting. These are rare, but they are the warnings every PDE5 inhibitor label carries.
Many of these effects overlap with sildenafil. Our sildenafil side effects guide covers how to tell normal effects from warning signs.
Who should not take vardenafil
Do not take vardenafil if you use any nitrate (such as nitroglycerin for chest pain) or a guanylate cyclase stimulator such as riociguat. The combination can drop blood pressure to a dangerous level. That rule applies to every PDE5 inhibitor.
- Heart rhythm: the label says men with congenital QT prolongation, or who take class IA antiarrhythmics (such as quinidine or procainamide) or class III antiarrhythmics (such as amiodarone or sotalol), should avoid vardenafil.
- Alpha-blockers and blood pressure drugs: combining them can lower blood pressure and cause dizziness or fainting, which is why the starting dose is 5 mg.
- Heart health: if a doctor has told you sex is not safe for your heart, a PDE5 inhibitor does not change that.
- Phenylketonuria: some vardenafil products contain phenylalanine, a component of aspartame. At least one current generic tablet label says so, so ask the pharmacist to check your product.
If you take blood pressure medication, our guide to ED meds and blood pressure explains the interactions in plain terms.
Levitra vs Viagra
Levitra (vardenafil) and Viagra (sildenafil) work the same way, take effect on a similar timeline and wear off on a similar timeline. Neither label shows one is better for most men. The real differences are practical.
- Dose in milligrams: vardenafil starts at 10 mg and sildenafil at 50 mg. A smaller number does not mean a weaker or stronger drug; the two simply differ in potency per milligram.
- Timing: both are taken about an hour before sex. Sildenafil's label allows 30 minutes to 4 hours.
- Half-life: about 4 to 5 hours for vardenafil, about 4 hours for sildenafil.
- Food: a high-fat meal slows both. With sildenafil, the label reports a 60-minute delay and a 29% lower peak.
- Side effects: similar headache and flushing. Sildenafil's label also notes a temporary color tinge to vision at higher doses. Vardenafil carries the QT-interval caution.
- Cost and availability: generic sildenafil is sold almost everywhere and is usually cheaper. HealthyMale lists generic sildenafil from $20 and vardenafil at $78, and Nu Image lists sildenafil as low as $3 a tablet on a 12-month supply.
Some men respond better to one PDE5 inhibitor than another, so a switch is a reasonable step when the first one does not work or causes side effects. That decision belongs to your clinician. For the broader matchup, read Viagra vs Cialis and sildenafil vs tadalafil.
Vardenafil vs Cialis
The main difference is duration. Tadalafil (Cialis) has a 17.5-hour half-life and improved erections for up to 36 hours in label studies, while vardenafil is a short-acting drug with a 4 to 5 hour half-life. Tadalafil is also unaffected by food and comes in a low daily dose. Vardenafil suits men who want a shorter-acting drug that clears faster, for example to limit how long side effects last. Tadalafil suits men who want spontaneity across a weekend or a daily routine. Our daily vs as-needed tadalafil guide covers that choice.
Vardenafil cost
Generic vardenafil costs more than generic sildenafil or tadalafil at most online sellers we track. On October 30, 2026, HealthyMale listed Vardenafil HCL 20 mg at $78 and the ODT at $182, against $20 starting prices for its generic sildenafil and tadalafil. DrHouse charges $129 or your copay for the visit and leaves the medication price to the pharmacy you pick, so you can shop the fill price with a discount card. Shed's Rise tablet combines apomorphine, tadalafil and vardenafil from $66.33 a month, but it is compounded and not FDA-approved.
Among non-partners, BlueChew sells a compounded vardenafil chewable (VAR) that is not FDA-approved. For every way to cut the cost of an ED prescription, see our ED drug coupon and discount guide.

Key terms
- Vardenafil
- The generic name of Levitra and Staxyn, an FDA-approved PDE5 inhibitor taken as needed for erectile dysfunction.
- ODT (orally disintegrating tablet)
- A tablet that dissolves on the tongue without water. Vardenafil ODT comes only in 10 mg and is not interchangeable with the 10 mg film-coated tablet.
- Half-life
- The time it takes the body to clear half of a dose. About 4 to 5 hours for vardenafil, about 4 hours for sildenafil and 17.5 hours for tadalafil.
- CYP3A4 inhibitor
- A drug, such as ritonavir, ketoconazole or clarithromycin, that slows the liver enzyme that clears vardenafil, which is why the label caps the dose when they are combined.
- QT prolongation
- A change in the heart's electrical rhythm seen on an ECG. The vardenafil label says men with congenital QT prolongation or on certain antiarrhythmics should avoid it.
- PDE5 inhibitor
- The drug class of sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil. They improve blood flow during sexual stimulation and must never be combined with nitrates.
Questions, answered
What is vardenafil used for?
Vardenafil is FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction. It is the active ingredient in Levitra and Staxyn and belongs to the same PDE5 inhibitor class as sildenafil and tadalafil. It needs sexual stimulation to work.
What is the usual vardenafil dosage?
Per the FDA label, most men start at 10 mg about 60 minutes before sex, no more than once a day. A clinician may raise it to 20 mg or lower it to 5 mg. Men 65 and older usually start at 5 mg, and several medications cap the dose at 2.5 mg or 5 mg.
Is vardenafil stronger than Viagra?
Not in a way that matters for most men. Vardenafil's doses are smaller in milligrams because it is more potent per milligram, not because it works better. The two have similar timing and similar half-lives. Some men respond better to one than the other, which a clinician can assess.
How long does vardenafil last?
Its half-life is about 4 to 5 hours, and it is taken about an hour before sex. The window in which stimulation can produce an erection more easily typically lasts several hours. For a longer window, tadalafil works up to 36 hours.
What are the side effects of vardenafil?
The FDA label lists headache (15%), flushing (11%), stuffy or runny nose (9%), upset stomach (4%), sinus symptoms, flu-like symptoms, dizziness and nausea. Seek emergency care for an erection over 4 hours, sudden vision or hearing loss, or chest pain.
Can I take vardenafil with food or alcohol?
The label says it can be taken with or without food, but a high-fat meal lowered peak levels by 18% to 50% in studies, so a heavy meal may slow it. Alcohol can lower blood pressure further and add to dizziness, so keep it moderate and ask your clinician.
Is generic vardenafil the same as Levitra?
FDA-approved generic vardenafil has the same active ingredient and must meet the same standards for strength and quality as Levitra. Most vardenafil filled in the US today is generic. The ODT form is not interchangeable with the regular 10 mg tablet.
Where can I get vardenafil online?
HealthyMale lists generic vardenafil 20 mg at $78 and a vardenafil ODT at $182 after a phone consult, with no subscription. DrHouse physicians can prescribe vardenafil after a video visit ($129 or your copay) and send it to your pharmacy. Prices checked October 30, 2026; verify current terms.
